William Goodwin's Diaries: Index

William Goodwin of Street Farm, Earl Soham.
Diaries dated from 1785-1810. Vols. 1 to 3.

Suffolk County Record Office Ref: HD 365/1, 2&3.

Transcribed by Mrs. J. Rothery of Earl Soham, August 2001

These notes were made for my own use whilst undertaking some research into the Diaries of William Goodwin of Earl Soham. Where the writings are not transcribed fully it is indicated by either … or by indicating the number of pages left out i.e. (1/2 page). In many cases a 'lead-in' has been typed. The transcript has not been re-checked. Original spellings are used. It is hoped to transcribe the parts omitted at a later date. Mrs. J. Rothery.

(Web editor's notes:
1. Some liberties have been taken with formatting for display as Web pages.
2. Previous visitors to these pages will have noted the problems with some dates in the diaries. All three volumes have now been re-checked against the original and dates corrected.
3. The entries in Volume 3 are particularly confused in date order. There are two or three different sets of handwriting, and there are still some blank pages in the middle of the diary. One possibility for the mixed dates is that some pages were missed accidentally, and used at a later date. Because of this lack of order, the final 5 years of notes have been lumped together.
4. To aid understanding of the diaries, a new "Glossary and Explanatory Notes" has been added in Jan 2003.)
